[Day 24] We built an automated essay grading system

For our CS224D’s final project, Lucio and I took on Kaggle’s Automated Essay Scoring competition. We tried to build a model that can automatically grade your essay. You input an essay and voila, it outputs the score for it. The dataset we have is for essays grade 7 to 10, but the model is easily scalable. It can be used to grade SAT/ACT practice essays or any kind of essays, as long as we have enough training data.

[Day 23] Just an evening on campus

I left the study room at 1am feeling nauseated. 4 more days and I will be done with my 2nd year. People told me: “You’re halfway there.” Halfway there and I’m already burned, exhausted, and cold. I couldn’t bear going back to my room so I just wandered around campus. This reminds me of something I wrote two years ago, on the day I arrived on campus. How things have changed!

[Day 21] I got lectured

Today, we had a poster session at 2pm and I talked to this printing guy at 8am asking for an express service. He said in a singsong voice: “Looks like you pulled an all-nighter. My father always says, what’s worth doing is worth doing last minute.” wtf I came to get my poster printed, not to get my life choices questioned.

Okay, that’s all I have to write. It’s finals week and as you see, I just pulled an all-nighter. I have no time for a thoughtful blog post.

Happy summer everyone!

[Day 19] Why are we such cowards?

Today, I had dinner with a really nice guy. Like two adults, we talked about our life goals. There were 6 things I was looking for–yes, I made a list, had it printed out and tucked away in my phone case. But when he asked, I told him only two. I wanted to be healthy and I wanted to make it as a writer and that was all. The other four, I couldn’t tell him. The truth is I hadn’t been able to tell anyone. There is something about admitting to what you want that makes you feel so vulnerable. Isn’t the more you want, the weaker you get? Would people make fun of me, the oh so needy and desperate?

[Day 18] How to become a better person

I have two friends who do the same personal project: actively trying to be a better person every day. Let’s call these two friends Marie and Paul. They are both college students living in the Bay Area. They reflect a lot on what they do, how it affects other people and sometimes seek other people’s opinions as well. They have a list of things they want to improve about themselves and practice these every day. I was having dinner with Marie the other day when the waiter asked us if he could take our plates away. We hadn’t finished our meal yet. It was a busy night at the restaurant and we had been sitting there for a while. Continue reading “[Day 18] How to become a better person”

[Day 17] That feeling when you have to be protected from your own country

Since I will be traveling outside the US over the summer, my advisor *strongly recommended* that I visit the travel clinic before I go. So I did. I told the doctor I plan to visit the UK and Vietnam.

“UK is fine but for Vietnam, you’d need to be careful.”

[Day 13] Weird things English speakers say

As a non-native English speaker, I always find the English language fascinating. People keep saying things that make absolutely no sense at all.

“It helped me grow as a person.” Like, seriously, what else could you possibly be growing as? A freaking tree?

“I have a runny nose.” OMG where did your nose run to? I can’t see it on your face.

“You do you.” I would rather be doing someone else, but I guess in the meantime I will have to keep on doing myself.

[Day 10] Timeline for all events related to the fish deaths in Vietnam

For those of you who don’t already know, recently there has been some social unrest in Vietnam. A lot of people went out on the street to protest over the mass fish death and the way the government has been handling the situation. As is the case with unrest, there are a lot of people spreading rumors and causing even more unrest. I think it might be helpful to just look at the facts. Below is a complete timeline of all those events: from when the fish started dying on April 6 to today. I only quoted accredited newspapers, and I don’t include rumors spread on social media. Please let me know if there is something I’m missing.
